“Abundance is not something we acquire. It is something we tune into”. These are wise words from Wayne Dyer, a spiritual and motivational leader who acquired fame after writing his top-selling book “Your Erroneous Zones”. The book sold 35 million copies. As one of the most renowned self-empowerment authors and speakers worldwide, because of his difficult childhood Wayne is also affectionately known as the “father of motivation” by the thousands of fans he has inspired. He went on to write over 10 best selling books, and fathered eight children.
Born in Detroit in 1940, Wayne’s parents Hazel and Melvin Dyer parted ways due to Melvin being an abusive alcoholic. As Hazel was not able to raise her three young sons she gave them up to foster care. It took a good few years of working for Hazel to build enough savings to regain custody of her sons. By then Wayne was 10 years old. It is those difficult years in foster care where Wayne Dyer still in his formative years learnt the art of resilience and how to face and overcome adversity. After a 4 year stint in the Navy during his late teens, Wayne enrolled in the Wayne State University where he earned his doctorate in education. At this time Wayne was already in serious counseling and publishing articles in various trade journals.
“How people treat you is their karma, how you react is yours”. Another thought provoking teaching from Wayne Dyer. He discovered that self-improvement techniques were what many people were looking for. So Wayne started giving talks on this subject and used this medium to reach out to people and also wrote his first book “Your Erroneous Zones”. Though the book was a non-starter – it initially sold only 3000 copies, all purchased by Wayne – after a lot of publicity exposure through road traveling promotions and radio shows it went on to become a top seller. Since then Wayne has written 30 books and recorded many audio programs. As he hit the path of fame, top TV shows like The Today Show, Oprah, Ellen and The Tonight Show did interviews with Wayne and he was also featured in several well known magazines. 1985 saw Wayne being chosen as one of the six prominent Americans. Time magazine printed his article “A Letter to the Next Generation”. Other books written by Wayne include “Manifest Your Destiny”, “The Power of Intention”, “Inspiration” and many more.
Wayne Dyer proclaims himself to be a self made man. While giving talks and lectures and also through audio programs and books, Wayne repeatedly refers to his difficult childhood – an experience many people could sympathize with and which increased his appeal as a teacher. Wayne’s advice to his readers is that they should pursue the path of self actualization – and that relying on oneself would act as a guide to a religious experience. Wayne also urges his readers not to focus on areas of guilt in their lives. According to Wayne focusing on guilt could be unhealthy as it could crush the present because of past actions indulged in. Wayne feels that people should follow the teachings of great spiritual leaders and focus on love, kindness, peace and concern – rather than just follow a religion blindly. His book “Real Magic” reflects Wayne’s spiritual bent, while “Your Sacred Self” discusses the higher consciousness. Wayne Dyer also holds a doctorate in Educational Counseling from Wayne State University and has also worked as an associate professor at St. John’s University, New York.
Wayne Dyers’ book “Wishes Fulfilled” has been converted into a TV show being aired presently. The message in the book/show is that people should concentrate on living an extraordinary life – to manifest their deepest desires and to reach within to their highest self, to reach out to your goals.
